DahnMuDo is a kind of martial art, but it is a little different than the ones with which you are likely most familiar. The movements of DahnMuDo are not for attack or self-defense, but rather for your own inner and outer self-development.

The name DahnMuDo consists of three words. Dahn means "primal energy," referring to the most basic energy of the universe from which all life and all things arise. Mu means "nothingness or limitless." Through the training, you drop away all the preconceived beliefs and limiting identities that hold you back to become a blank slate of infinite possibility. The word do simply means "study," referring to your commitment to learning the movements and principles of DahnMuDo.

The training is based on something that most Asian martial arts forms share as a common element – the development and use of one’s ki energy. Sometimes called chi or qi, ki is the life force that gives life and vitality to your body. An important part of DahnMuDo is the building up of energy within your body and the development of your ability to sense and direct energy.

DahnMuDo is a discipline in the truest sense. It exists to help you become your best self in body, mind, and spirit.

On the level of the body, it will strengthen and invigorate you. The postures begin with very simple and gentle motions designed to open the joints of the body. This is important since people often hold energy blockages in the joints. Once the energy is more free-flowing in the body, you will then learn to circulate it more effectively. As you build your physical energy, you will master basic martial art footwork, sword postures, and energy accumulation forms. Meanwhile, your balance will improve, and your muscles and tendons will become stronger and more flexible.

DahnMuDo also develops your mind in multiple ways. First, it develops focus; to maintain the balance needed to perform the movements and to feel the flow of energy, sustained concentration is essential. Second, it relaxes your mind and reduced stress since many of the movements are slow, graceful, and flowing. Third, it cultivates confidence and determination as you move through the process of mastering the forms and breaking through any obstacles you encounter.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, DahnMuDo is for your spirit. The movements themselves are reflective of a person’s journey toward awakening. You are not completing these movements to gain a sense of accomplishment that pleases the ego, however. Rather, you are stripping your emotional burdens and conceits away. When you’ve accomplished that, you’ll be ready to embrace your true purpose in life, and you will feel a genuine sense of oneness with all creation through the energy that you feel.

You can think of DahnMuDo as forming a solid triangle in your being, a triad of body, mind, and spirit. Through consistent, sincere practice of DahnMuDo, you can create a balanced whole within yourself, and you will be ready to face the world with equanimity and grace.

DahnMuDo exists to help you move beyond the limitations that are currently holding you back, whatever those may be. That’s why it is called “The Art of Self-Mastery.” Through it, you will connect with energy, you will experience oneness with the cosmos, and you will discover the limitless being that you truly are.
