Meditate with Natures Elements This Summer

The sounds and elements of nature can be so healing.

We spend so much time away from nature, it's easy to forget that meditation, yoga, and tai chi were born in the wild! Natural elements—wind, water, earth—are integral to any self-healing practice.

Be sure to take advantage of the outdoors this summer, and enjoy some elemental sound healing meditation, the way nature intended! By tapping into sounds of the natural elements, you can step into the flow of nature and heal your body, mind, and spirit.

Whether it's sea or mountain, desert or forest, nature's sensual elements put your mind at ease and revitalize your soul.

With these restorative nature meditations, you can open your chakra energy centers, improve the flow of Qi through your meridians, improve your brain's elasticity and clear your mind of negative thoughts.

1. In the Forest - Breathing in and out deeply, letting the pure, fresh oxygen the trees have given you deep, vast forest fill your lungs. Feel the air rushing into every cell of your body. Imagine this air expanding your diaphragm and opening your heart chakra. Let its gentle pressure send your heart's energy center spinning fast, clearing any emotional blockages.

2. By Streaming Water - When you are by a stream or river, listen to the clearing sounds of moving water. Watch the colors and shapes of the stream as the water moves over stone and sand and wood as the water careens through its banks. Imagine that the water energy enters through the top of your head and fills your entire body. Cleansing, cooling and massaging your neck, shoulders, pouring down your torso and into your legs and toes. Imagine that this flowing water is clearing your stress and washing away stagnant emotions.

3. Talk to a Tree - Find a tree you feel especially drawn to and sit or stand against it. Feel the the tree with your hands and against the back of your head or forehead. Inhale the smell of it deeply. Notice any movement of its branches or leaves, or even the small creatures that may be moving across it. Listen for sounds of birds, insects or wind. Feel the tree through the palms of your hand. You may gently hug the tree and feel its heart with your heart. Communicate with this tree through all your senses.

4. Sounds of Wildlife - Sit by the edge of a pond, meadow or creek and listen closely for the subtle sounds coming from the living creatures surrounding you. Close your eyes and focus on their sounds. Listen, more and more closely for 2-3 minutes. Soon, all your thoughts will fall away and your head and heart will resonate with the vibrations of life and creativity.

If you don't have time to get away this summer, bring the mountains (or rivers or oceans or lakes) to you! When you can't be out in nature, try a sound meditation course to awaken the healing spirit of nature within you and activate your Solar Body. All you need is your imagination to visualize and receive all the healing benefits of the natural world.

Wherever you find yourself this summer, you can clear your mind and reinforce your connection to the earth with these simple and deeply satisfying meditations.
