Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome characterized by widespread chronic musculoskeletal pain, trouble sleeping, fatigue and impairment in physical and psychological functioning. While the medical community searches for ways to help patients cope, their understanding of this syndrome has concluded that people with fibromyalgia have lower thresholds for pain and are actually experiencing pain differently than the majority of the population.
A more holistic approach may be of benefit and meditation is becoming widely accepted on scientific and medical grounds as a core aspect of pain management for fibromyalgia. It is thought that meditation may influence the neurological pathways that process pain.
Regardless of the method of meditation, the practice of letting go and allowing the mind to become still leads to relaxation and a sense of peace. This sense of peace offers health benefits to the individual.
Meditation should not be thought of as some state that might be difficult to attain. There are many, many avenues that lead to inner stillness. It is this stillness where healing can take place.
Novices can work with guided meditations, music meditations, breathing techniques and more to discover what works best to begin this practice. “Practice” does help improve the quality of the experience. Try watching DVDs with images of nature or even listening to meditative music to become familiar with the deep relaxation of meditation.
Our thoughts, feelings and perception of life events have an influence on our health. A regular meditation practice is good medicine for how we think, feel and respond to life’s events and, it appears, can change the way the brain functions with regard to the pain of fibromyalgia.
