If you’re trying to get fit and create a healthier lifestyle, don’t go it alone! Bring your family on your journey and watch everyone’s overall health and happiness blossom!
By practicing activities that promote health, mindfulness, mental wellness and family bonding, you will transform the connections within your family and instill a habit of healthy living in your children. Lead by example with a fun routine and show the little ones that staying healthy isn’t all gyms and boring exercises!
Try these mindful activities with your entire family and feel the love strengthen:
- Boogie Down & Sing Your Heart Out
Since you’re probably not hitting the club like you used to, turn Friday night into family disco night! Put on some family friendly tunes, crank up the volume, turn down the lights, and sing and dance till you drop! Dancing is not only great exercise for everyone involved (hello, zumba!), but it releases the soul from the confines of expectation and allows the energy within to flow freely! Leave embarrassment at the door and show everyone it’s ok to be yourself.
- Change from the “To-do” List to the “TO-FUN” List
Nobody likes doing household chores, especially kids on a beautiful Saturday afternoon when they could be playing outside! Transform mundane household duties into a giggle inducing game that will keep you out of the loony bin and get your kids involved in keeping the house clean! Some examples are:
- Scavenger hunt to tidy up the common areas (Find the remote control, newspaper from yesterday, Fido’s bone, daddy’s shoes, etc)
- Matching game while unloading the dishwasher (Find this plate’s family. Where does the other pan live? etc)
- Play “Go Fish” with sorting laundry (Do you have this sock’s partner?)
- 5-minute race to tidy up every night (Winner with most items collected gets a small, non-food reward like a sticker or super secret high-five.)
- Cook Together & Eat Together
If you’re trying to eat healthier, involving your kids in the journey will teach them about food and help you stay on track. Not only is it important to teach your children the importance appreciating food, it is also a great opportunity to teach some basic cooking skills! Bring out the step stools, tie on the aprons and get your hands dirty! Once the meal is prepared, make a habit of having dinner together every weeknight around a table - without phones, TV, music or distractions. Play a game to get everyone talking or share the highlight and lowpoint of each day. Make one-word answers illegal and give descriptive answers lots of praise.
- Walk & Talk Around the Block
You’re not the only one who wants to walk off dinner before getting into bed. Starting the habit of a light walk after a meal will not only help with digestion for the entire family, but it is a great opportunity to engage in a comfortable conversation. Teach kids about the importance of being active. Take time to ask questions and listen to the answers. Be present and mindful.
- Escape & Meditate
Winding down at the end of the day makes for a better night’s sleep and a better morning for everyone. Include the whole family in a nightly meditation to reflect on the day and clear the mental clutter before bed. Practice a mantra, listen to calming music or simply sit in silence for a few minutes together. The energy between you will strengthen your connection to each other and to yourself.
Involving the whole family in your personal goals will bond you together and help everyone stay focused. When you do all things from the heart, everyone around you benefits.
Send high-fives all around and turn up the smiles!
