4 Rituals to Celebrate the Energy of the Summer Solstice

The first official day of summer is also marked by the longest day of the year—the summer solstice. On June 20, 2017 the sun will reach its highest point in the sky (in the Northern Hemisphere), and we will experience the shortest night of the year.

Throughout history, humans across cultures, time, and religion have celebrated the summer and winter solstices, as well as the spring and autumn equinox. While we have become a bit disconnected from these ritualistic celebrations in our busy, modern lives, there are easy ways you can align with the energy of the summer solstice and celebrate this culmination of light.

There are many traditions, rituals, and ceremonies to celebrate, honor, and harness the energy of the sun. Historically, this helped people connect deeply with nature and better understand the influence the world around us has on the world within us.

4 Rituals to Celebrate the Energy of the Summer Solstice


  1. Watch the Sun Rise: On the morning of the longest day of the year, be an early bird and watch the sun rise. The summer solstice is a celebration of light, awakening, and vibrant energy so catching the first moments of sunlight on this most-important day will fill you with an appreciation for the simple pleasures and remind you that you are one with all things—including the sun.

  2. Activate Your Solar Body: We are all made of the same energy that spins the earth and beats our hearts. By connecting with this vibrant energy through sunlight meditation, you can awaken your Solar Body to activate your self-healing power. Ilchi Lee suggests, “Imagining your body to be a solar panel, visualize receiving sunlight and being charged with energy.”

  3. Reflect on Your Journey: The solstice is a way to reconnect with, and honor, the path that you're on. It is a time to reflect on what you've accomplished and consider what you wish to accomplish in the future. This is a perfect time to journal or sit in conscious thought and get clear on where you'd like to go next.

  4. Spend Mindful Time Outside: While this may seem obvious, being outside on the day of the summer solstice, when the energy of the Earth's Northern Hemisphere is at its highest, is a wonderful way to align with and absorb this palpable energy. Grab the family, or enjoy some alone time, and connect to the earth by getting grounded or having a picnic under the shade of a tree in the park.

The sun is a life-giving force that affects everything around us and within us. By taking the time to connect with that energy, you can better understand your inner and outer worlds. This connection creates an intimacy with nature that has been all but lost in the modern world.
