Stand Up to Seasonal Allergies with Energy Medicine

If you can't enjoy spring weather due to seasonal allergies, consider tapping into your body's own ability to strengthen your immune response—with energy medicine.

Recent medical research seems to be catching up with what ancient healing arts—like acupuncture, acupressure and other energy medicines—have shown all along: the benefits of movement, from physical exercise to moving your Qi is nothing to sneeze at.

Movement, of both your physical body and your subtle body, or Qi energy, boosts the immune system and clears your energy meridians to allow the free flow of vital life force.

Improved blood and energy circulation moves lymph through the body, increases urine output, clears lungs, tones the kidneys and flushes away metabolic waste from the blood, leaving you feeling healthier and more energized.

For seasonal allergies, meridian exercises, acupuncture and acupressure, yoga and herbs can all provide effective relief.

Meridian Exercises
Meridian exercises are integral to improving Qi circulation and breaking up congestion.

Dahn Yoga exercises like Whole Body Tapping, Lung Energizer and Neck Lengthening Backbend that are specific to lung and respiratory health are all excellent, gentle moves that will help clear and ease your symptoms.

Acupuncture & Acupressure
Acupuncture and acupressure are two excellent methods of moving and balancing Qi in your body.

Acupressure helps move Qi along energy meridians in your body by manipulating thin, hair’s-width, flexible needles inserted into the skin at acupuncture points.

WoonQi acupuncture is particularly useful for treatment of allergies. It uses a single needle in the point at the crown of the head known as Baek-Hwe. When combined with the meditative action of the patient, it is uniquely effective for strengthening and balancing the immune system so that, when spring arrives, your system is more adaptive than reactive.

If you don’t have access to acupuncture or would prefer a less invasive method of moving your Qi, try self-acupressure which can be just as effective as acupuncture.

With self-acupressure, you can access acupuncture points all by yourself—no needles or special training are required. All you need are your two hands and fingers for instant self care on the go.

Two acupressure points that are especially helpful for allergies are the Four Gates points, located on the back of the hands and the top of the feet.

When stimulated, the points on the back of the hands, between thumb and forefinger, help open your Large Intestine Meridian to the healing energy that flows down through the body.

You can stimulate the lower Four Gates points by pressing or massaging the point on the top of each foot, between the large and second toes. This point balances the Liver Meridian and the energy that flows up the body.

Herbs
Herbs that are that are drying and warming can help ease the suffering from seasonal allergies without the expense and side effects of over the counter medicine.

Stinging nettles, butterbur, garlic, eucalyptus and feverfew are just a few herbs that are sure to calm irritated breathing passageways and improve circulation in the head and lungs.

The easiest way to get the benefits of these herbs is to eat them fresh, use them dried as seasoning for your meals or drink them as tea. You can blend many medicinal herbs with your regular green or black tea, or, when you’re not feeling well, go for pure herbal infusions.

Just be sure to ask your healthcare provider or a certified herbalist about possible contraindications with any other medication you are taking.

Yoga
Yoga is as an effective way of taming the raging discomforts of seasonal allergies.

Sleeping Dragon is an effective pose that really gets your Qi moving. An energy accumulation pose, it builds Qi, warms the lower Dahn-Jon and the kidneys.

While lying on your back, straighten your legs and hold your ankles and knees firmly together. Slowly raise your head and feet about three inches off the ground.

Breathe deeply and hold the posture for five seconds. Soon you will feel a pleasant buzz and warmth in your limbs as the effort heats your Dahn-jon and gets your blood flowing. As you become stronger you can increase the time you hold the posture.

Movement, herbs and acupuncture offer a multifaceted approach for allergy symptoms.
