Many of us describe our lives as harried, stressful and demanding. As an antidote, here is an exercise that helps develop sensitivity and awareness of Qi, the energy that permeates all life. Relax and regenerate with the simple meditative technique of Ji Gam.
Ji Gam allows us to stop the energy drain that may be occurring through the constant and ever-changing tides of emotion that we experience in our lives. By focusing on the powerful Qi in our body, we come to know this pure energy and understand that ultimately we can begin to accumulate, regulate and control Qi for our own health.
Additionally, it is this energy that can be transmitted to others to assist with their health and well-being.

Ji Gam Exercise for Relaxation and Regeneration
Since any tension in the body will affect your ability to feel Qi energy, it is important that you begin by taking a moment for relaxing both mind and body. If possible, perform this exercise after you have completed a session of exercise such as yoga or Tai Chi. The relaxation and state of mind created by exercises such as these will greatly deepen your experience of Qi and will increase the benefits of your practice.
Sit, Breathe & Relax
From a comfortable, relaxed seated position with a straight back, place your tongue on your palate. Become fully present, allowing the details of your day to slip away. As you breathe slow, relaxing breaths, scan your body for any tension and let it melt away. Release any thoughts as you bring your hands together, nearly touching, in front of your chest.
Focus on your hands and the space between them as you become aware of the temperature of your palms. Now allow yourself to begin to feel the pulsations of your heartbeat in your hands.
Open your hands a little wider distance from each other and notice any sensations you feel. You may notice cool or warm temperature, tingling, tickling or flowing. Does the feeling seem magnetic, or possibly electrical? Is there a sense of pressure, or color or light? The experience of Qi varies with each person, so pay attention and get to know how Qi energy is uniquely experienced by you.
Play with the edges of this experience by expanding your hands slightly, or face both palms down, then upward as you observe differences in the feelings. Experience the energy of Qi as a ball between your hands and roll it within your palms.
Draw your ball of Qi toward you and place this energy on your lower abdomen at the area known as the Dahn Jon. With a clear mind, visualize Qi rejuvenating the body as its health benefits permeate every cell in your body. If you notice tension or blockages, imagine that the energy of Qi is dissolving the blockage and allowing health, energy and vitality to return.
Rub your hands together very quickly to gather even more Qi. Allow a sense of gratitude and love to fill your heart and mind as you sweep your palms over your face, your head, your neck and shoulders, then down your body and legs. Notice and retain the refreshed sensations as you return to standing position, strengthened, recharged and ready to travel well through the hours and demands of the day!
